CMA CGM and Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) have agreed to invest $434 million to expand the Jeddah Islamic Port, according to The Maritime Executive. The project, signed during a French-Saudi Investment Roundtable in Paris, aims to add a new terminal and boost the port's capacity by approximately 2.6 million TEUs annually. This development includes the construction of new deep-water berths designed to accommodate the world's largest container ships, Marine Insight reports.

The investment will be implemented in collaboration with Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani). Red Sea Gateway Terminal and CMA CGM Group have signed definitive agreements to jointly develop and operate Terminal 4 at Jeddah Islamic Port, Seatrade Maritime News states. The project is expected to bring about 1.6 billion Saudi Riyals (SAR) in investment into Jeddah Islamic Port.

According to ship.energy, the development will significantly enhance the port's infrastructure, creating a new state-of-the-art container terminal. The new terminal will add up to 2.6 million TEUs of annual handling capacity, improving the port's ability to handle larger vessels. The project is scheduled to commence soon, with an estimated completion date of 2024.

Project Details and Impact

The agreement between Red Sea Gateway Terminal and CMA CGM will involve an initial investment of approximately $434 million (SAR 1.6 billion). The development includes the construction of new deep-water berths designed to accommodate the world's largest container ships, enhancing the port's competitiveness in the region's logistics landscape. The project will also involve the modernization of existing facilities, improving operational efficiency and reducing turnaround times for vessels.

According to Container News, the new terminal will play a crucial role in boosting the Red Sea trade and global supply chain reliability. The expansion is expected to attract more container traffic, further solidifying Jeddah's position as a key hub for maritime trade in the Middle East.

What This Means for Operators

The expansion of Jeddah Islamic Port and the development of Terminal 4 will have significant implications for ship operators. The new terminal will offer deeper berths and increased handling capacity, allowing for the berthing of larger vessels and higher container throughput. This will reduce turnaround times and increase operational efficiency, potentially lowering costs for ship operators. Additionally, the enhanced capabilities of the port will likely attract more trade, offering operators more opportunities for cargo and services.

For ship operators, the improved infrastructure and expanded capacity at Jeddah Islamic Port will provide a more reliable and efficient gateway to the region, facilitating smoother operations and potentially opening new markets. The investment is expected to create a more competitive environment, driving innovation and service improvements in the region's maritime trade sector.
