Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) has taken delivery of MV Baltazar, its third and final CABU III vessel from New Yangzi Shipyard in China. The MV Baltazar is the latest addition to KCC’s fleet, bringing the total number of combination carriers to 19.

Equipped with a range of advanced energy efficiency technologies, including an air lubrication system, a shaft generator, and a Mewis duct, MV Baltazar also features two bound4blue eSAIL® suction sails, making it the first vessel in KCC’s fleet to utilize wind-assisted propulsion technology. This marks the introduction of such systems within KCC’s operational vessels.

MV Baltazar is designed for trades carrying caustic soda solution to Australia and returning with dry bulk commodities. According to KCC, this third-generation CABU vessel offers a 35% lower carbon footprint and approximately 20% higher earnings capacity compared to the company’s first-generation CABU vessels.

“With these three CABU newbuilds, KCC’s service will further improve flexibility and cost efficiency of the scope three emissions of our customers’ ocean freight,” stated a representative from KCC. The vessel complements sister ships MV Balder and MV Bastion, all built with similar energy-saving measures.

Operational Efficiency and Emissions Reduction

The CABU activities have become an integrated part of the aluminum value chain, supporting customers' supply chains and long-term logistics planning. These vessels are specifically designed for trading patterns that combine wet and dry bulk cargoes with minimal ballasting, resulting in a significant reduction in carbon emissions per transported ton compared to standard tanker and dry bulk vessels.
