Samudera-Imoto venture orders container ship for Japan push

Recently formed joint venture between Samudera Shipping and Imoto Corp has ordered its first newbuilding. The contract was signed with Zhejiang Xinle Shipbuilding for the construction of a 696 teu feeder container ship, scheduled to be delivered in the first half of 2028.

According to Splash 247, Blue Ocean Shipping, the subsidiary established by the joint venture, was incorporated earlier this year with Samudera Japan holding a 51% stake and Imoto Corporation contributing the remaining 49%. This order marks the first newbuilding for Blue Ocean Shipping. The vessel will support the venture’s expansion in Japan's coastal and regional shipping markets.

The move signifies an ongoing commitment by both parties to strengthen their market presence, particularly within the Japanese market where they aim to leverage their combined expertise and resources. Samudera Shipping Line’s acquisition of two containerships from Imoto Lines earlier this year, including the Sagami and Hyogo, took place in March 2026 (source: TradeWinds).
