Panama Canal reduces draft limits as El Niño intensifies

The Panama Canal Authority (PCA) announced a reduction in the maximum authorised draft for vessels transiting its Neopanamax locks. The first stage of this adjustment began on August 26, 2026, with the maximum permitted draft being lowered to 48 feet (14.63 meters). A second adjustment is planned but details are not yet available.

According to Port Technology, these changes were prompted by an assessment of current and projected water levels in Gatun Lake, which is crucial for maintaining safe passage through the canal's locks. The Maritime Executive reports that the PCA is acting proactively to stay ahead of potential impacts from El Niño, which has intensified this year.

The reductions do not appear to affect transit numbers significantly, as noted by Seatrade Maritime News.
