Canada has announced a significant investment in its maritime infrastructure, committing C$11 billion ($7.95 billion) to build six new icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard, marking the largest single shipbuilding contract in Quebec’s history. The new vessels, known as Polar Class 3, are designed to be approximately 110 to 120 meters in length and capable of navigating through up to 1.4 meters of ice. They will operate a medium Coast Guard helicopter and have a range of about 20,000 nautical miles at 11 knots, according to Davie. These icebreakers will be equipped with the latest technology to ensure they can operate year-round in second-year ice, with potential capabilities to handle older multi-year ice as well.
