HMNB Portsmouth has been an important part of Portsmouth since 1194 and home to nearly two-thirds of the Royal Navy's surface vessels, including the Flagships HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales. The base serves as an employer and provides accommodation for Royal Navy personnel serving at the base or on Portsmouth-based ships. Typical ship and dock types include Archer-class ships, fisheries guard vessels (HMS Tyne, Mersey and Severn), as well as the fearsome Type 45 destroyers and Type 23 frigates.
