DEME was founded in 1876 by Hendrik Willem Ackermans. In its early years, DEME focused on dredging and marine works, with notable projects including the dike works on Rozenburg Island in the Netherlands in 1878. The company continued to grow throughout the late 19th century, developing expertise in hydraulic engineering and infrastructure projects. By 1895, DEME had constructed the hopper suction dredger Schelde II, setting a new standard in dredging technology. In 1901, DEME began working on the Scheldt, shifting from deepening the river to other types of work. The company has since expanded its operations globally, with projects in Argentina and the Port of Antwerp. DEME celebrates 150 years of marine and environmental engineering in 2026.
