Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has introduced remote-controlled rail cranes at Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), extending automation to its rail operations. New Remote-Controlled Rail Cranes at Altenwerder

A new rail gantry crane, manufactured by Künz, was delivered and installed at CTA, designed for fully remote-controlled operation. An existing rail gantry crane was retrofitted, allowing it to be operated both manually and remotely. These upgrades were gradually put into operation since the beginning of the year. According to Hellenic Shipping News, the remote control technology enables rail gantry crane operators to work from ergonomically designed office workstations in the terminal building, contributing to improved efficiency and productivity in rail processing.

Jens Hansen, Member of the HHLA Executive Board, stated: "We are pleased with the successful commissioning of the remote-controlled rail gantry cranes. The Port of Hamburg is Europe's largest rail port, with approximately 2.6 million standard containers (TEU) transported by rail in 2025.
