BEAVER ISLAND TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (BITA) is the owner of the M/V Emerald Isle and operates a planned fixed route ferry service between Charlevoix, Michigan, and Beaver Island, Michigan. BITA was founded in 1993 under Act 196 to establish a transportation system in the greater Beaver Island area. The ferry M/V Emerald Isle was designed and placed into service in 1997. BITA and Beaver Island Boat Company (BIBCO) have entered into a thirty-year management agreement to operate the ferry services. BIBCO is the owner of the M/V Beaver Islander, which is also used for the planned fixed route. BITA employs a part-time employee as an Administrative Assistant with a work schedule of 10 to 15 hours per week and an hourly rate between $20 and $26.
