Chinese carriers expand Arctic shipping routes

Chinese carriers are preparing to intensify their presence in the Arctic, marking a significant expansion of maritime routes that could provide faster connections between Asian and European markets. According to gCaptain, at least six operators plan to use the Northern Sea Route (NSR) for both container and bulk voyages. These include plans by Sea Legend Shipping, which is introducing its first regular liner-type Arctic service, with eight weekly sailings from eastern China to Felixstowe, Hamburg, and Rotterdam.

New services on the horizon

Sea Legend will deploy the Dubai Tower for its new China-Europe Arctic Express, set to depart from Zhoushan on 15 August. The service aims to reduce transit time between Ningbo and Felixstowe from about 40 days via traditional routes to roughly 20 days through the NSR. Sea Legend has received licences for seven vessels this year, one of which is the Istanbul Bridge, known for setting speed records in previous Arctic voyages.

Meanwhile, Chinese shipping company NewNew Shipping will also operate services using the NSR, deploying the container ships NewNew Panda 1 and Xin Xin Hai. These vessels are scheduled to connect China with Europe and Russia, including calls at St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad by mid-October. However, it remains to be seen if plans for a larger fleet of ice-class container ships will materialize as initially announced.

Regulatory support from Russian State Atomic Energy Corp Rosatom is evident in its issuance of permits for the seven Chinese transit vessels. These developments highlight China's growing interest and investment in Arctic trade, driven by both economic benefits and geopolitical considerations. As sea routes through the NSR become more viable, ship operators can anticipate increased traffic and potentially reduced operational costs.
