VLIZ, the Flemish Institute for the Sea, focuses on enhancing scientifically-backed knowledge and sustainable use of coastal areas, seas, and oceans. It leads the European hub for surface ocean CO₂ measurements through SOCAT, coordinating annual updates. VLIZ also operates the multidisciplinary research vessel RV Simon Stevin for coastal marine research in the Southern Bight of the North Sea and the eastern part of the Channel. The institute is involved in monitoring the carbon balance of the European continent and its surrounding regions through ICOS, an integrated carbon observation system.
