Prince William Sound Oil Spill Recovery Institute (OSRI) was mandated by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 following the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Founded as a legacy organization, OSRI focuses on advancing oil spill prevention, response, and recovery in Arctic and Subarctic marine environments through research and education. Its mission is organized around four strategic goals: Understand, Respond, Inform, and Partner. OSRI currently works on projects such as identifying the impacts of oil spills on food safety in subsistence communities and developing a remotely operated surface vessel for oil spill response. The organization also partners with entities like the North Pacific Research Board to fund research projects. Located in Cordova, Alaska, OSRI has been operating since 1990 and continues to be an important organization by ensuring preparedness for future oil spills.
