Manzanillo Internacional Terminal (MIT) began its operational activities on April 16, 1995, near the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal, immediately adjacent to the Free Zone of Colón. The areas were formerly used as a US Navy Airbase and became Panamanian property according to the Torrijos-Carter Treaties of 1977. MIT has developed into an important container terminal in the South American region, with a pier over 1,600 meters long and modern cranes as well as IT systems. The total project investment budget exceeded 650 million dollars. The terminal operators are able to connect traffic from about 125 ports, which statistically reflects their global loading movements.
