Nord Stream AG, headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, is an international consortium of five major energy companies founded in 2005 to plan, build, and operate the Nord Stream gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea. The pipeline consists of two strands each 1,224 kilometers long, capable of transporting up to 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. The consortium includes Gazprom International Projects North 1 LLC (51% ownership), Wintershall Dea GmbH and PEG Infrastruktur AG (E.ON) with 15.5% each, N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie, and ENGIE with 9% each. The pipeline was operational by 2012 and is designed for at least a 50-year operation. Investment costs amounted to 7.4 billion euros, with about 30% financed through the consortium's own capital proportional to their ownership shares, while the remaining 70% were covered by bank loans and export credit agencies.
