The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has condemned a sharp escalation in attacks on merchant shipping, warning that seafarers are being killed and injured in ongoing conflicts they have no part in. This comes amid ongoing tensions between the US-Iran war and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz
In the Strait of Hormuz, two oil tankers, Mombasa B and Al Bahiyah, were struck while transiting the southern route. One seafarer was killed, and several others injured. Additionally, a seafarer remains missing after an attack on the M/V GFS Galaxy. These incidents follow reports that in the past 24 hours, three civilian vessels have been attacked by Iran, with two seized. The United States has also seized one vessel.
Escalation in Black Sea
Simultaneously, merchant vessels in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea have faced attacks amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, leading to a full suspension of shipping in the Sea of Azov. ITF General Secretary Stephen Cotton stated that commercial shipping has become a theatre of this war, with civilian seafarers becoming primary casualties.
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and the Joint Negotiating Group (JNG) have designated the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf as a Warlike Operations Area (WOA), activating enhanced protections and compensation for seafarers serving on vessels in this zone. The designation reflects the unacceptable use of commercial shipping in these conflicts.
According to ITF reports, three attacks by Iran and two seizures, along with one seizure by the United States, have occurred in the past 24 hours, indicating a severe threat to civilian seafarers operating in conflict zones. The ITF calls on all parties involved to cease using commercial shipping as an instrument of war.
