Novorossiysk, Russia (Ports Europe) August 27, 2026 – Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has suspended new cargo bookings to and from Russia's Novorossiysk port following a drone strike on one of its container ships. The incident, which took place on August 25, involved the ship MSC Ulsan III, which was struck while en route from Novorossiysk to Tekirdağ, Turkey. According to Martin Kelly, Head of Advisory at EOS Risk Group, the ship was hit in the Black Sea, though there were no reports of injuries. The MSC Ulsan III, a 39,611 deadweight tonne container ship built in 2004, was continuing its journey after the incident. AIS data later showed the ship had reached the Sea of Marmara.
Increasing Security Concerns in the Black Sea
The drone attack on the MSC Ulsan III is part of a growing pattern of attacks on commercial shipping in the region. On August 21, the Turkish vessel RMS Team was hit by a drone while en route to Novorossiysk. This incident, coupled with the sinking of the Fesco-operated containership Yanina after being hit by two drones, has led to Fesco and its Turkish operator Kalyon stopping all sailings in the Black Sea. Additionally, Ukraine has reportedly attacked five grain carriers at Novorossiysk and Tuapse, claiming they were carrying military supplies.
The attacks on Novorossiysk and other Black Sea ports have led to significant disruptions. Ukraine had earlier struck an oil terminal in the region, and there have been calls to cease attacks on international tankers heading to or loading at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium’s offshore terminal near Novorossiysk. Some grain terminals at the port have also ceased operations, highlighting the broader impact of the ongoing security situation.
Operational Adjustments by MSC
MSC has taken immediate steps to mitigate the risks posed by these attacks. The company has suspended new bookings to and from Novorossiysk with immediate effect. While the MSC Ulsan III was continuing its voyage, the company has advised customers to contact its Russian office for alternative shipping options. Despite the suspension, MSC continues to operate through other Russian ports, including St. Petersburg. The company is closely monitoring the security situation and plans to resume its weekly service to Novorossiysk when it deems it safe.
