The upcoming SMM trade fair in Hamburg will host the public unveiling of AYK Energy’s “Cosmos” Marine Battery Container. The company confirmed that the exhibition will take place next month, with its stand listed as Hall B6, booth 342 (MarineLink). Founder Chris Kruger describes the event as a milestone for marine power‑train integration.

Technology and safety credentials

The Cosmos system is presented as a fully containerised, swappable battery solution that can be installed without a dedicated battery room. According to Ship & Bunker, the design incorporates eight independent safety levels, IP67 ingress protection and an A60 fire‑rating, features intended to meet stringent maritime standards.

MarineLink adds that each container can operate independently or be stacked onshore for off‑site charging, allowing operators to “load dozens of batteries at a time” to match voyage energy requirements. The flexibility enables both temporary hotel‑load power while vessels are in port and permanent installation for hybrid or fully electric ships.

Target market and early demand

The company is initially focusing on ferries, RoPax and passenger vessels, but the solution is also pitched to tugboats, feeder ships and other commercial craft that require high‑density energy storage (Ship & Bunker). Ship.energy reported that AYK Energy has already begun receiving orders for the Cosmos container while it proceeds through class approval. The firm has successfully completed the New Technology Qualification (TQ) stage—a prerequisite before formal class certification can commence (MarineLink).

Operational implications

By removing the need for a purpose‑built battery room, the system promises to cut engineering design time and lower project costs. Kruger told MarineLink that “the beauty is in the ease and flexibility of use,” noting that swappable modules can be exchanged between voyages or permanently fitted depending on operational strategy.

What this means for operators

Ship owners considering electrification now have a modular option that can be scaled to match specific route profiles without extensive vessel redesign. The ability to pre‑charge containers ashore and swap them at speed could reduce turnaround times in ports, support compliance with emerging emissions regulations such as the EU ETS for short‑sea shipping, and provide a hedge against rising bunker fuel prices. Operators will still need to await formal class approval before deploying the technology fleet‑wide, but early orders suggest market confidence in the concept.
