ABB has secured a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International to supply the power and propulsion systems for a new 230-meter semi-submersible heavy transport vessel named Grand Tour. The vessel is being constructed specifically for offshore contractor Allseas, which will use it in its operations in Europe's growing offshore wind market. Scheduled for delivery by 2028, this advanced ship will play a crucial role in transporting large offshore wind converter stations from fabrication facilities to installation sites.

Propulsion and Power Solutions

The propulsion package includes four 3.5-MW Azipod units, providing a combined output of 14 MW. These nozzled thrusters are designed to offer high bollard pull and dynamic positioning capabilities necessary for precise operations alongside the Allseas' heavy construction vessel Pioneering Spirit. The gearless configuration aims to reduce mechanical losses and minimize noise and vibration, enhancing efficiency during transit.

In addition to the propulsion system, ABB will also provide a medium-voltage AC power plant featuring closed-ring topology, its PEMS power and energy management system, and enhanced power plant protection systems. These components are integrated with remote condition monitoring capabilities to ensure reliable operation of the vessel throughout its service life.

Rune Braastad, President of ABB’s Marine & Ports division, highlighted that projects such as this underscore how advanced, integrated systems can make operations leaner, cleaner, and more efficient.

Operational Details

The vessel is designed to carry loads of up to 40,000 metric tons on its stern deck. During transfer operations, the main deck will be submerged below waterline, allowing converter stations to be floated directly onto Allseas’ heavy construction vessel for installation. This innovative approach streamlines logistics and reduces transit time, which is critical in the offshore wind industry.

The newbuild will serve as a specialized logistics link supporting Allseas' expanding role in Europe’s offshore wind construction market. By utilizing advanced technology from ABB, Grand Tour sets standards for efficiency and environmental performance in heavy transport vessels used within this sector.
