Ukuloba Kulungile Investments (UKI) is a 100-per-cent black-owned fishing company with sectors such as Hake Inshore Trawl, Hake Longline, Horse Mackerel, Large Pelagic, Squid, Tuna Pole and Line, and West Coast Rock Lobster. The firm operates eight vessels in these areas and is involved in several Joint Ventures. UKI has its own marketing department that markets the majority of its fishing products. The history of the company began in 1999 as a staff empowerment initiative and has since continued to develop continuously. Initially, the operation focused on the Squid sector, but an own long-term empowerment model was developed that considers the needs of shareholders and shares 50 per cent of profits as dividends while investing the rest for further expansions.
