Spain Govt Oceanografía, also known as Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO-CSIC), has a history of 112 years and is a nationally important reference center for marine research, marine observation, and scientific-technical consultation. The Institute oversees nine oceanographic centers and employs 956 staff members. It possesses six oceanographic ships and two unique infrastructures (ICT). Services encompass 24 scientific and technical areas, distributed across five departments and three fields. Additionally, there are 50 research groups and 888 projects. In July 2026, the IEO investigated the impacts of fishing on sharks and rays in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, with project TIRRAQUI 2 continuing work initiated in the first phase. The Institute is active aboard the oceanographic research ship Vizconde de Eza.
