SAAMI was founded in 1926 and is dedicated to setting industry standards for safety, interchangeability, reliability, and quality in firearms and ammunition. The company publishes cartridge and chamber drawings, reference and proof ammunition, and generally accepted firearms and ammunition interchangeability guidelines. SAAMI also provides firearm safety rules and transport data sheets. Since its establishment, SAAMI has been involved in creating voluntary standards for firearm sound suppressors and has welcomed new member companies to its institute. The organization celebrates 100 years of standards-setting in 2026.
