Nautical Archaeology, also known as The Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA), was founded in 1972 by Dr. George F. Bass and is a non-profit international research organization. The main activity of the Institute includes underwater excavation and archaeological research, particularly of ships and other nautical sites. The Institute has engaged in more than 25 projects over the last fifty years on various world seas and marine regions. Central services include the use of remote sensing techniques, underwater excavations, digital recordings, decompression diving, artifact conservation, scientific analysis, and extensive research works. The organization has a close partnership with the United States government and is registered as a 501(c)3 organization.
