Seafarers' Ministry of the Golden Gate (SMGG) is an 80-year-old organization that has been dedicated to the welfare of seamen and the promotion of maritime traffic since 1946. The SMGG oversees ships in the Port of Oakland and organizes visits for seamen, enabling them to maintain contact with land and receive support. They have a SHIP VISIT & WELCOME TEAM consisting of bay area residents who were intensively trained to interact with seamen. The organization also has a program named "Christmas at Sea Ditty Bag," which provides gifts for seamen. SMGG works closely with the International Maritime Center and is engaged in improving the International Marina Centre in the Port of Oakland.
