OBSEA is a cabled seafloor observatory located 4 km off the Vilanova i la Geltru coast in a fishing protected area. It is connected to the coast by an energy and communications mixed cable, providing an uninterrupted power supply to scientific instruments and a high bandwidth communication link. Real-time data is available, avoiding issues encountered in battery-powered systems. The observatory uses an optical Ethernet network to transmit data continuously to marine sensors. OBSEA is an associated partner of EMODnet and collaborates with interoperability projects using standard protocols. The observatory is designed by SARTI-UPC.
