IAU (Instituto Antártico Uruguayo) was founded in 1968 by a group of Privates and has been under the protection of the Ministry of National Defense since August 28, 1975. The Institute is responsible for Uruguay's Antarctic activities in the fields of science, technology, and logistics. It has two bases in Antarctica: ECARE (Echafallado Científico Antártico Ruperto Elichiribehety) and Artigas on Jorge Island. Uruguay became a member of the Antarctic Treaty in 1980 and a full-fledged consulting party in 1985. IAU has a long history of 60 years, beginning with the first base establishments and treaty membership.
