MV Cape Don Society Inc was founded in 2004 and is a non-profit charitable enterprise dedicated to the preservation of the historical Commonwealth Lighthouse Service ship MV Cape Don. The ship was built in 1963 in Newcastle, NSW, and was part of a unique "Cape" class of vessels designed for service on important trade routes. Conservation work is carried out by a crew of volunteer members of the MV Cape Don Society, who are overseen by the Sea Heritage Foundation Board of Governors. The ship is located at the Old Coal Loader Terminal in Waverton, NSW 2060 and is currently being prepared for an extensive dry dock refurbishment. Conservation works form part of a ten-year strategic plan which also includes the introduction of training and employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians.
