Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde (BfG) advises, researches, informs, and supports the development of Germany's waterways, particularly large rivers, canals, and coastal waters. Its activities focus on advising the Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), and other ministries and stakeholders. The BfG specializes in ecosystem research, climate change impacts, sediment identification and analysis, biodiversity conservation, digitalization opportunities, transportation system resilience, environmental awareness, and scientific policy advice. Notably, the BfG has initiated an online survey on using virtual reality to make river ecosystems more understandable and accessible. Founded in 2015, the BfG operates across Germany with a particular focus on major waterways.
