The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) is an independent, objective, and non-partisan marine research institute headquartered in Portland, Maine. Founded to address global ocean challenges, GMRI develops collaborative solutions focusing on seafood sustainability, ecosystem health, climate change, and the marine economy. The institute has launched four strategic initiatives: Adapting Fisheries & Seafood, Building Climate-Ready Communities, Developing the Blue Economy & Supporting Working Waterfronts, and Supporting Energy Solutions. GMRI's work includes research, community-driven solutions, and partnerships with industry, researchers, government, and technology partners to strengthen the regional seafood supply chain. The institute has received a $15M U.S. National Science Foundation award for its Seafood Engine project in New England.
