VMR Southport, originally formed as Southport – Surfers Paradise Air Sea Rescue over 59 years ago, provides 24/7 marine rescue assistance from Point Danger to Bribie Island, including up to 30 nautical miles seaward. The organization, now a part of Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ), offers free rescue services to the boating public. VMR Southport has 135 volunteer members contributing over 75,000 unpaid man hours annually, operating four modern, fully equipped rescue vessels. The organization’s base, located on the Southport Spit, allows for rapid response to emergencies in the marine environment. In 2020, VMR Southport performed more than 860 marine rescue activations and over 500 training runs. Founded in 1963, VMR Southport has been serving the Gold Coast waterways for over 55 years.
