The Sacramento Port Authority was founded in 1947 under California Harbors and Navigation Code Section 6800 et seq. and operates the Port of West Sacramento, a deep-water port that has been open for trade since 1963. The harbor is located 79 nautical miles from San Francisco and features direct access to Suisun Bay via a 40-mile deep water canal maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers with a depth of 30 feet. Today, the Port primarily serves the sectors of agriculture, natural resources, and construction in Northern California. Its main cargo categories are exports of rice and imports of cement. The North Terminal, the principal shipping complex, is situated at 2895 Industrial Boulevard in West Sacramento; there is also a private terminal for cement imports named Cemex.
