ROPME, established in early 1979 based on the Kuwait Regional Convention for Cooperation on the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment and Coastal Areas, is a regional organization focused on marine environmental protection. The organization was founded to implement the Kuwait Action Plan and its protocols, with its secretariat formally established in Kuwait in 1982. ROPME operates in the ROPME Sea Area (RSA) and has moved to a new building in Sulaibhikat, Kuwait. Key activities include environmental monitoring using remote sensing technology, oceanographic cruises for marine research, and the Mussel Watch Programme. The organization also publishes Arabic newsletters and maintains a Marine Sample Bank at its headquarters. ROPME's Executive Secretary is H.E. Dr. Jassem Al Beshara.
