OCIMF, or the Oil Companies International Marine Forum, was founded in April 1970 following incidents such as the Torrey Canyon spill in 1967. It has grown into a leading authority on safety for the global marine industry and now has over 100 member companies. OCIMF promotes safe and environmentally responsible transportation and handling of oil, petrochemicals, gas, and emerging fuels. The organization works with its members to manage operational hazards and prepare for future threats. OCIMF operates an online platform called Communities of Practice that encourages shared learning between members, the secretariat, and invited stakeholders. As of 2023, OCIMF has consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
