Petrel Fishing Co Ltd was founded in 1947 and has its origins in the Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town. Initially, the company focused on general engineering work, but soon developed a specialized focus on the manufacture and repair of deck equipment for the fishing sector. In 1950, Petrel became the first company in South Africa to manufacture trawl winches, and introduced hydraulic drives for these equipment. By 1970, the firm had evolved into a leading manufacturer of deck equipment for the South African inshore fishing sector. Petrel began exporting fishing gear to the largest fleets on the western coast of South America in the late 1970s, becoming a leading supplier there.
