Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Oberrhein (WSA Oberrhein) is a regional authority under the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes (WSV), responsible for approximately 320 kilometers of the Rhine from km 170,000 to just before the confluence with the Main at Mainz. Additionally, it oversees about 15 kilometers of two Altrhein arms in Hesse and a section of the Neckar River in Mannheim. With around 350 employees, WSA Oberrhein implements tasks derived from the Federal Waterways Act and Inland Navigation Duties Act. The authority focuses on maintaining and enhancing waterway functions as part of the natural landscape, including hydromorphological measures along the Rhine. Specifically, it is involved in implementing a French-German agreement signed in 2000 for cooperation in performing maritime police duties on the shared Rhine section between Basel and Lauterburg.
