Auckland Coastguard operates in the Hauraki Gulf and beyond, providing 24/7 emergency assistance to boaters. The organization owns, maintains, and operates three dedicated rescue vessels entirely crewed by volunteers. Founded in 1934, Auckland Coastguard has evolved from relying on private rescue vessels to maintaining its own fleet, including the 'heavy' rescue vessel Lion I built in 2004. The original organization has since been divided into nine units around the Hauraki Gulf, each contributing to the mission of saving lives at sea. Auckland Coastguard is a non-profit organization registered as a charity in New Zealand.
