Santos was founded in 1949 by two entrepreneurs, Robert Francis 'Bob' Bristowe and John Langdon Bonython, after they discovered an oil reserve in southern Australia. The company was registered on March 18, 1954 as South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search (SANTOS) and achieved public stock listing on the Adelaide Stock Exchange in 1954. Santos discovered the first significant gas potential in the Cooper Basin in 1963, followed by the Moomba Gas Field in 1966, which allowed the construction of a pipeline to Adelaide. The company began construction of the leading Adelaide Gas Pipeline in 1968 and also built facilities in Moomba for processing the extracted gas, which are still in operation. Santos brought the first natural gas to Adelaide in November 1969 and discovered natural gas and oil at the Tirrawarra-1-Fe in 1970.
