Alaska Longline Company, founded in 1978, defends the interests of small fishing boats in Alaska and supports scientific-based fisheries legislation through cooperative research and innovation. The company works to preserve the sea and improve the economic diversity of small fishermen. In collaboration with the Fishery Conservation Network, they promote cooperation between fishermen and experts to ensure the sustainability of fishing. Linda Behnken, a fisher since 1982 and now the executive director of the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association, has received the Heinz Award for fostering cooperation between scientists and fishermen to protect the ecological systems of the Alaskan coast.
