Kola Scientific Centre, also known as Murmansk Marine Biological Institute (MMBI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1935 and is the oldest scientific institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the North. The institute conducts extensive research in the Arctic waters, from the Barents Sea to the oceans between Iceland and the Laptev Sea. Its main activities focus on environmental research, particularly in relation to the ecology of the Arctic sea and its inhabitants. The institute organizes regular scientific conferences and seminars, including the XVII International Scientific Conference "Complex Studies of Spitsbergen and Adjacent Shelves 2026". It also has an active research travel program, which has explored the Spitsbergen archipelago in the summer of 2026.
