SkySails is a pioneer in wind-assisted ship propulsion systems based on kites, successfully proven on sea-going vessels between 2004 and 2012. The technology uses large kites to replace up to 2MW of main engine power, generating five to 25 times the propulsive force per square meter compared to normal sails. The system operates by flying kites at altitudes of up to 400 meters, taking advantage of strong and constant high-altitude winds not affected by water surface friction. The SkySails propulsion system is controlled using a control computer on the bridge, with autopilot software ensuring optimal flight patterns based on wind conditions and ship speed. The kite, control pod, and towing rope are integral components of the system, while the launch and landing process is managed by a hydraulic power pack.
