The company was founded in 1976 by the establishment of Société Malgache d'Équipement et de Maintenance (SMEF), led by Guy Besnardau, an engineer in the industrial refrigeration sector. In 1980, Réfrigépêche Est was established, specializing in industrial crabs harvesting along the eastern coast of Madagascar. Sopromer was founded in the same year to market fish by-catch, which occurs during crab harvesting tours. In 1985, Réfrigépêche Ouest was established in the western coastal regions of Madagascar to carry out similar activities as Réfrigépêche Est. In 1991, Sopemo was established to support the two fisheries and organize crab harvesting tours in the Morondava area.
