The Marine Transport Workers’ Trade Union of Ukraine has launched a plea for stronger international action to protect seafarers, merchant shipping, and Ukraine’s port infrastructure. In a letter addressed to the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Labour Organization (ILO), MTWTU highlighted ongoing attacks on civilian vessels as a significant threat to maritime safety and global trade.
According to Marine Transport Workers' Trade Union of Ukraine, the attacks pose a direct risk to seafarers’ lives and freedom of navigation. The union stressed that these incidents jeopardize not only the operation of merchant shipping but also global food security. MTWTU urged the international community to intensify coordinated efforts to safeguard maritime workers and ensure the safe operation of the Black Sea maritime corridor.
The appeal comes at a time when tensions in the region remain high, with concerns over the safety and security of seafarers navigating through conflict zones.
