On 18 June 2023, the submersible Titan, operated by U.S.-based OceanGate Inc., experienced an implosion while diving near the RMS Titanic wreckage site approximately 372 nautical miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland and Labrador. The investigation found that the pressure hull of the Titan was made from a carbon fibre cylinder, which is novel for human-occupied deep-sea diving submersibles typically constructed of steel or titanium.
