MPC Container Ships (MPCC) has reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2026, revealing a slight dip in gross operating profit. According to Baird Maritime, MPCC's gross operating profit dropped to US$95.4 million from US$107.4 million in the same period of 2025. Operating revenues also decreased, reaching US$116.9 million compared to US$137.9 million a year earlier.

Contract Coverage and Fleet Utilisation

The company maintains strong contract coverage, with a backlog of US$2.2 billion, representing 99 per cent of its operations for the current year (2026) and 85 per cent for 2027. The outlook extends into subsequent years: MPCC has 60 per cent coverage in 2028, 39 per cent in 2029, and a robust fleet utilisation rate of 98.8 per cent.

MPCC's CEO, Constantin Baack, commented on the market conditions during this period: "The second quarter was another quarter of consistent performance and a reminder of the value of contracted visibility in a market that remains volatile and hard to predict."

Fleet Renewal Strategy

The vessel renewal strategy continues to deliver results for MPCC. The company's balance sheet remains solid, with 30 debt-free vessels and a leverage ratio of 28.4 per cent. MPCC operates 65 vessels in its fleet, aggregating approximately 186,000 TEUs, including 17 newbuildings on order.

One of the newly delivered vessels arrived in August, contributing to the company’s continued focus on modern tonnage and resilience in supply chain disruptions. The robust intra-regional trade continues to support market conditions, despite volatility.

Earnings Analysis

In its financial results, MPCC noted an adjusted EBITDA of US$95.4 million, compared with US$107.4 million for the second quarter of 2025. When adjusting for non-recurring items, the profit stood at US$65 million, down from US$80.7 million in Q2 2025.

Despite the decrease, MPCC's dividend payout remained stable, with a quarterly recurring dividend of US$0.04 per share. The company also reported high average time charter earnings of US$24,951 per day, down slightly from US$26,247 in Q2 2025.

What this means for operators

The ongoing market volatility and the company's focus on contracted visibility provide a clear roadmap for other container ship operators. By securing long-term contracts, operators can mitigate risks associated with fluctuating markets and maintain steady revenues. The high utilisation rates suggest that operational efficiency remains crucial in this sector.
