HD Hyundai showcases advanced LNG carrier technologies at Gastech 2026

HD Hyundai, a leading shipbuilder with five key affiliates, is set to showcase advanced technologies and innovations at Gastech 2026, the world's largest gas exhibition. The event, which runs from Monday through Thursday in Bangkok, Thailand, expects to attract approximately 1,000 companies and 50,000 visitors globally.

New Generation LNG Carrier Designs

At Gastech 2026, HD Hyundai will feature a range of gas carrier technologies, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, floating storage and regasification units (FSRU), and liquefied carbon dioxide carriers. Lloyd’s Register (LR), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries have joined forces to develop a new generation of LNG carrier designs using hybrid electric propulsion systems.

The project, which received an Approval in Principle (AiP) at Gastech 2026, focuses on the development and safety verification of the vessel’s hybrid electric propulsion system. The design aims to incorporate advanced features such as crew accommodations at the bow to free up upper-deck space for wind-assisted propulsion systems.

HD Hyundai will also present its three-tank LNG containment system, which is being applied to 177,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers in collaboration with GTT and DNV. The vessels are scheduled for delivery from the second half of 2028 through 2029.

Technology Certifications and Business Agreements

During Gastech 2026, HD Hyundai will hold 30 official events to discuss technology certifications and business agreements. Lloyd’s Register will conduct a drawing appraisal of an LNG carrier that received approval in principle at last year's event. The vessel features crew accommodations at the bow to optimize upper-deck space for wind-assisted propulsion systems.

HD Hyundai will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ABS and Siemens to develop digital twin technology for safety assessments of ammonia-fueled vessels. This initiative aims to support new technology certification efforts, while also exploring advancements in hybrid electric and LNG carrier technologies. The company will also present its three-tank LNG containment system at a seminar hosted by French LNG containment technology company GTT.

Industry Collaboration

The collaboration between HD Hyundai and other industry partners underscores the growing importance of innovation in the maritime sector. Andy McKeran, Chief Growth Officer of Lloyd’s Register, highlighted the potential benefits of hybrid electric propulsion systems, stating that these solutions can deliver fuel efficiency gains and lower emissions.

According to Hongryeul Ryu, Executive Vice President & CTO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, this project will provide valuable insights into applying advanced electric propulsion technologies in large vessels. Kwang-Pil Chang from KSOE’s Advanced Research Center emphasized the significance of these advancements for shipping's transition towards more efficient and sustainable operations.
