Deep Water Foundation (Deepwater X) is a Californian nonprofit organization dedicated to the scientific exploration of deep-sea environments, particularly from Lake Tahoe. The company develops open-source hardware and software to support and conduct deep-sea expeditions. It aims to publicly catalog new and rare species, subterranean geology, historically significant objects, and human impacts in deep-sea areas. Deep Water Foundation plans to explore any lakes in North America with a highly mobile launch and recovery vessel and an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) to survey the bottom for new species, geographical formations, historical artifacts, environmental impacts, and other points of interest.
